The Aula Meeting of Minds 2001 brought together people from the fields of architecture and urban space,
government and grassroots organizing, the arts, and technology for a weekend of discussion regarding self-organizing social systems. A rich variety of case examples were presented by various contributors. Specific themes included democracy, ethics, timing, and the uses of space and technology.

SOCIAL HACKERISM DEBATE

The opening keynote was delivered by philosopher Pekka Himanen, who discussed the open model of software development and its possible applications to other fields. The next day Ilkka Tuomi, an independent researcher and Aula member, debated Himanen's arguments in his talk.

MECHANISMS OF SELF-ORGANIZATION
|
Various mechanisms supporting self-organization were presented over the course of the Meeting. These included the peer-review system identified by Himanen as central to the open development model. Various contributors, including Juha Huuskonen and Andreas Nordwall, expanded the discussion by providing functioning examples of the peer-review mechanism.

TOOLS FOR DEMOCRACY
|
Finland's Minister of Culture Suvi Lindén opened the Valtikka.net web service in the pre-meeting press conference. The service enables youth to participate in the policymaking through discussion and suggestions. Contributors including Sampo Villanen and Sampo Karjalainen presented cases of maintaining order and democracy in systems ranging from virtual communities to political demonstrations.

TIME-SPACE FRAMEWORK
|
Expanding on William J. Mitchell's book E-topia, Marko Ahtisaari presented a framework for classifying and contrasting different mediums of communication. He also distinguished between five methods of structuring communication that he termed Versioning, Filtering, Dividing, Arranging, and Legislating.
